Problems at Work
Working with "troubled" employees can be one of the most challenging and frustrating aspects of managerial positions. Many companies are now establishing formal programs, such as EFAP's to help managers and their employees. Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) is a system which provides professional services to employees whose job performance is or may become adversely affected by any number of factors including substance abuse, emotional problems, family difficulties, legal issues, physical health disorders and/or similar personal problems.

These problems not only threaten the employees' effectiveness on the job, but also trigger a wide range of health problems (physical and emotional), as well as disrupting the performance of other employees.

Recognizing The Warning Signs:

Employees don't develop problems overnight. When a problem is spotted at an early stage, it allows the opportunity for positive counselling and intervention before a major crisis develops.

Some Signs That A Problem May Be Developing:
  • Decline in performance.
  • Employee appears apathetic or withdrawn.
  • Employee continually complains about trivial aspects of the job.
  • You have found it difficult to establish a good working relationship with employee.
  • The employee is reluctant or refuses to discuss the problem.
  • The employee is continuing interpersonal problems with others in the organization.
  • The employee resents criticism.
  • The employee's behaviour is beginning to negatively affect others in the work group.
After these initial warning signs, the problem typically becomes more serious. At this stage, you will be faced with more serious problems: absence without leave, disobedience, insubordination, or non-performance of job duties.

EFAP has proven to be a viable means of improving employee performance and retaining a company's valued resource -- the employees. EFAP not only benefit the troubled employee, but the employer as well. At TNARS, we believe that the cost effectiveness and the results demonstrated among troubled employees make EFAP a program all organizations should look into.
